Launching Ceremony for PPA 6 Ruggiero die Lauria held in La Spezia, Italy

La Spezia, Italy, 6 October 2023 - The launching ceremony for the PPA 6 “Ruggiero di Lauria” was held at the Fincantieri shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia, Italy.

"Ruggiero di Lauria" (1250–1305) was an Admiral of Italian origin in the service of the Aragonese sovereigns who, as Chief of the fleet of the Aragonese Kingdom of Sicily, distinguished himself with victories achieved in numerous naval battles, ensuring the supremacy of the Sicilian Catalan fleet in the Western Mediterranean.

The Godmother of the launching ceremony was Mrs. Ilaria Lazzareschi, sister of Lorenzo Lazzareschi, an Italian Navy officer and diver decorated with the Gold Medal.

During the ceremony, the ship was christened. This involves breaking a bottle of champagne, which is thrown against the hull of the ship by the Godmother, a symbolic gesture, intended to bring good luck and safe travels to the vessel whilst at sea.
