French LSS 2 “Jacques Stosskopf” launched

Penhoët, Saint Nazaire in France, 13 September 2024 - The second French Logistic Support Ship (LSS), “Jacques Stosskopf”, was officially launched at the Chantier de l’Atlantique shipyard.

The ceremony was hosted by Mr. Laurent Castaing, CEO of Chantier de l’Atlantique, and Mr. Pierre-Eric Pommelet, CEO of Naval Group. The event was attended by Mr. Emmanuel Chiva, Director of the French Armament General Directorate, Admiral François Moreau, general inspector of the French Navy, Captain Lorenzo Raciti, Italian National Programme Coordinator for LSS in NAVARM (Italian armament directorate) and Mr. Joachim Sucker, director of OCCAR-EA.

The Franco-Italian Logistic Support Ship (LSS) Programme, managed by OCCAR on behalf of the French Armament General Directorate (DGA), and its Italian counterpart, NAVARM, aims to develop and produce six ships (two for Italy and four for France) along with In-Service Support (ISS), with an option for a third ship for the Italian Navy. The LSS “Jacques Stosskopf” is the second French Ship in this Programme, following the Italian ship “Atlante” launched early 2024 and the “Jacques Chevallier” delivered in 2023.

This launch marks a significant milestone for the fast-paced LSS Programme. During his speech, the OCCAR-EA Director highlighted the successful progress made so far and expressed confidence that industry will continue its excellent work in completing the assembly and conducting tests before the ship’s scheduled departure from Saint Nazaire in 2025.

The event underscores another achievement for OCCAR’s cooperative  management approach, which effectively addresses and resolves technical, design and construction challenges through close cooperation and coordination with the French DGA and the Italian Naval Directorates.

The OCCAR-EA Director also reaffirmed OCCAR’s commitment to maintaining its position as Europe’s premier choice for managing complex defence equipment programmes across all domains.

The ceremony included the official appointment of the first Captain of LSS “Jacques Stosskopf”. The ship is named in honour of Jacques STOSSKOPF (1898-1944), a distinguished polytechnician and maritime engineer who played a key role in the French resistance during World War II. Jacques Stosskopf was general engineer, recipient of the Legion of Honour medal as Commander, the Croix de Guerre from World War I medal and the French Resistance medal.
