Keel Laying Ceremonies in Riva Trigoso for LSS
A further important target in the Logistic Support Ship (LSS) Programme has been successfully achieved with the keel laying of the aft part of the ship. The respective ceremony took place at FINCANTIERI shipyard in Riva Trigoso (Genova) on 12th July.
The LSS Programme embraces the Development, Production and ten years of In-Service Support. The delivery of the ship is foreseen in 2019. It is being built in two different sections:
- the aft section (86m long, approx. 7,000 t) in Riva Trigoso and
- the fore section (94m long approx. 4,000 t) in Castellammare di Stabia.

As the workload is shared between two sites, it is expected that the Programme will make good progress. The keel laying for the fore section is scheduled by the end of this year. Finally, the two sections will be assembled in FINCANTIERI shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia).
With its state of-the art design and technical features, LSS will meet today’s requirements of a modern Navy in various scenarios. The ship is characterised by a high level of flexibility and will be capable of supporting naval Joint Task Forces (refuelling at sea with fuel, lubricants, ammunition, spare parts, food, drinking water, specialist medical products, equipment and other materials) as well as conducting civil protection roles and disaster relief operations.
