Formidable Shield 2017: participation of Italian FREMM Rizzo

Italian Ship (ITS) Rizzo, the 6th Italian FREMM frigate, took part in the exercise Formidable Shield 2017, held in the North Sea next to Scotland from late September until mid-October. This NATO naval exercise is dedicated to Integrated Anti-Missile Defence (IAMD) with a focus on anti-ballistic missile defence.

In addition to Formidable Shield, ITS Rizzo has also been involved in the exercise JOINT WARRIOR, a Royal Navy exercise, covering all warfare domains (Anti-Air Warfare, Anti-Submarine Warfare, Anti-Surface Warfare and Asymmetric Warfare) in which the newest FREMM Ship proved its capabilities among 32 other ships of 13 different Countries, being recognised as one of the most technologically advanced warships.

This valuable achievement is clear evidence of the effectiveness of the programme management by OCCAR, through the FREMM PD, to provide a complex multi-purpose ship, able to face all weather conditions from Indian Ocean to North Atlantic without any impact on its operational capabilities.

Furthermore, the outstanding performances of Active Multi-Functional Radar and the effectiveness of Gun Systems have been recognised by the Task Force Commander who highlighted the good results in terms of interoperability and capabilities achieved by ITS Rizzo.
