The steel cutting of the first of four bow sections for the logistic support units LSS (Logistic Support Ship) ordered by Chantiers de l’Atlantique to Fincantieri under the FL LSS – FLOTLOG programme (“Flotte logistique”) took place on 18 June 2020 in Fincantieri’s Castellammare di Stabia shipyard.

This particular milestone represents the concrete entry into production of the 1st LSS named “Jacques Chevallier”, with the bow section scheduled to be delivered in Saint-Nazaire by June 2021 for final assembly. The ship is expected to be delivered to the French Navy in December 2022.

The sections will be built at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard by Fincantieri with deliveries spanning until 2027.

The FLOTLOG programme consists of the development, construction of four Logistic Support Ships (LSS), destined to the French Navy, by the temporary consortium between Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Naval Group. The Franco-Italian LSS Programme is led by OCCAR on behalf of DGA, the French Armament General Directorate, and its Italian counterpart, NAVARM.

The LSS main mission is to provide Logistic support for an extended period of a Naval Group – Carrier Air Group, Amphibious or Surface Group for the following operational functions: refuelling at sea, replenishment in terms of lubricants, ammunition, spare parts, food, drinking water, specialist medical products, general equipment and other materials.

LSS also provides Medical support; and, as any Naval asset, LSS provides support to search and rescue operations and aid to vessels in distress.

LSS also answers specific requirements of its customers, ranging from the support to Large Joint Carrier Aircraft Group to anti-pollution operations ; also addressing humanitarian civilian, and disaster relief operations.
